Thesis on a Comparative Study between the Course Contents of ELT of Institute of Education and Research (IER) and English Department of Dhaka University

ELT is a widely used teacher centered term as in ELT division of large publishing house; ELT training etc. Now-a-days ELT is a burning subject for higher studies in the context of Bangladesh. Many public universities as well as private universities offer courses on ELT. In this research the researcher made a comparison between the ELT course of IER and English department of DU and showed a way of enriching the course contents of ELT of IER. The main purpose of the study was to compare the course contents of ELT of IER and English Department of Dhaka University and thus find out the differences between these two. It also focused on the effectiveness of the ELT course of IER. Moreover it guided to modify the ELT course of IER. From the review of the literature, the researcher came to know that no such research was done before in IER or English department of Dhaka University. But, there were some studies found in both IER and TTC which were partially related to the study. 
The researcher mainly reviewed all types of comparison and comparative studies those were available in the library of IER and TTC. The main features of comparison were identified from the comparative studies and thus the comparison of the course contents of ELT of IER and English department of Dhaka University was made. The researcher also identified the drawbacks of the ELT curriculum of IER and suggested some modifications. This was a descriptive research. The study was carried out in IER and English department of Dhaka University. The respondents of the study were students of both IER and English department of Dhaka University. In the research purposive sampling was used. Interview schedule was used to collect data from the respondents. The data was analyzed statistically and it was discussed qualitatively. Findings of the study revealed that there were similarities between the course contents of both IER and English department of Dhaka University. But, there were some dissimilarities. The course content of both can be enriched by following the others.

The word ELT means English Language Teaching and Learning. That means the term ELT refers to all the teaching learning activities related to English language. Though by the word ELT most of the time English language teaching is meant, but at the same time learning of English language should be considered. Because, teaching is always related to learning. 

The ELT course introduces students (who want to be English Teacher) with some modern approaches to language teaching. Besides, it helps students to acquire the skills in designing curriculum and developing instructional materials. Moreover, it will make students more efficient in using the skills of English language. Now ELT is a widely used teacher centered term as in ELT division of large publishing house, ELT training etc. 

On the other hand very recently comparative education has gained recognition as a distinctive part of knowledge. Especially teachers and policy makers need to be introduced with education system, educational management and administration of different countries. May be this is the reason behind comparative education’s being a compulsory subject for teachers and teacher educators. Various works have been done in the field of comparative education in home and abroad. In Bangladesh, comparative study has been done in the field of Science, Mathematics and comparison of curriculum and Education system in various aspects of various countries and institutions. 

Bangladesh is one of the few countries of the world where teachers can start teaching without any formal training. In addition to this factor, very limited in-service training programs are offered to teachers. English is a foreign language in our country. It is taught as a compulsory subject in school and college level. But very few English teachers of this country have training on ELT. So, ELT is a crucial area of study in our country today. It is one of the emerging fields throughout the world.
