Internship report on Training and Development Practices in Square Consumer Products Ltd

SQUARE CONSUMER PRODUCTS LTD (SCPL) introduces itself as a member of SQUARE Group of Companies, a leading corporate house in Bangladesh which is engaged in the manufacturing and marketing of pharmaceuticals, toiletries, consumer goods, textiles, spinning, knitting, packaging, printing etc. Recently the company achieved ISO 22000 for its food safety management system. Square Consumer Products Limited has introduced three popular brands in the market. SCPL has started producing and marketing intrinsic quality of powdered spices (Like chilli, turmeric, cumin and coriander), mixed spices and some ethnic snacks (like Meat Curry Masala, Fish Curry Masala, Garam Masala, Haleem Mix, Chatpati Mix, Chanachur etc.) in terms of taste, flavor & texture. Beside these, their plan is to manufacture and market various food & beverage items very shortly. SCPL has a well-organized management system by which they smoothly operate process of setting and achieving goals through the execution of five basic management functions (long & short-term planning, organization, direction, co-ordination and control) that utilize human, financial and material resources. To SCPL, human resource is the key to all success. The main strength of HR is their quick informal responses to comply with continuous changing environment. Recruitment & selection of quality HR and retention of quality family members is the number one HR Policy of SCPL. The company has bonus schemes and training programs for employees. Training and development ensure the continuous improvement for SQUARE employees. The company’s growth plans for the future is to strengthen operations in domestic market, increase market share internationally and nationally, improve productivity and profitability to offer more value to the shareholders. In 2001, SCPL started its operation as an individual company. Within a very short span of time SCPL has already drawn the attention of the consumers by providing quality products and preferred services. Their dedication to quality, uniform products, customer service and competitive prices has given them unique position in the market.

Square Consumer Products Ltd. (SCPL) is the leading consumer goods company in Bangladesh. It has been running its business of about twelve years and leading the industry since 2001. Research points to the importance of good recruitment systems in the organization. Organization is becoming too effective for their numbers of employees employed by them. Most problems concerning Human Resources commence when training and development & recruitment and selection are not handled properly. Resignations, low motivation, poor performance may be due to incorrect procedures in the training and development process or in recruitment & selection.

Training & Development enables for people to enhance their skills, keep them updated with recent changes. SCPL offer both on-the-job and off-the- job at both theoretical and practical training opportunities through a range of Local, Regional and International Training programs that include both functional and managerial levels on the basis of Training Need Assessment. Training Need Analysis (TNA) is conducted by Department Heads and Human Resource Department jointly on the basis of job analysis. The article also discusses the importance of good recruitment at technical & managerial levels & the implications that are encountered as a result of ad hoc recruitment process. Recruitment is responsibility of every manager in the organization.

The main reason of this study is for familiar with the practical knowledge about the Training and Development process which followed by SCPL. To SCPL, human resource is the key to all success.

This field has become more important because employees need to learn new skills, advance their knowledge, and meet the challenges of technology in achieving high performance. SCPL always concern about their continuous development for their executive which increase the efficiency level.

Now a day, Education is not just limited to books and classroom. From education the theoretical knowledge is obtained from course of study, which is only the half way of the subject matter. Practical knowledge has no alternative. The perfect coordination between theory and practice is of paramount importance in the context of the modern business world now days. Internship program brings a student closer to the real life situation and thereby helps to launch a career with some prior experience. As an HR major student, this study will provide me with abundant information and practical knowledge on how human resources of both corporate offices are dealt with through T&D programs. The focus though is more on the executive level.

This study will prepare me for facing and managing any type of environment and group of people, regardless of class, income level, age, gender, technical knowhow, and educational level. This is why I was eager to do my internship on Square Consumer Products Ltd.(SCPL) & my internship report on the above mentioned topic which is directly related with my acquired knowledge. By doing an internship program in SCPL I could get practical experience on Training & Development, which is under HR functions as I have done my major in Human Resource Management.
