Hazard may be defined as “a dangerous condition or event, that threat or have the potential for causing injury to life or damage to property or the environment.” Hazards in Dhaka city can be grouped into two broad categories namely natural and manmade.
Natural hazards:
Natural hazards are hazards, which are caused because of natural phenomena (hazards with meteorological, geological or even biological origin). Examples of natural hazards are cyclones, tsunamis, earthquake and volcanic eruption, which are exclusively of natural origin. Landslides, floods, drought, fires are socio-natural hazards since their causes are both natural and man-made. For example flooding may be caused because of heavy rains, landslide or blocking of drains with solid waste.

Urbanization and Crime in Bangladesh- An Empirical study on Dhaka City

This study examines the spatial variability in the distribution of crime specially the relationship among crime and urbanisation. Due to advent of modern technologies and globalization the urbanization process has been boosted in dhaka city. The main objectives of the study were to analyze the interelationship of urbanization and crime, to find out the characteristics of victim of urban crime in dhaka city and to understand the special characteristics of urban crime. Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) is responsible for the provision, operation and maintenance of water supply, sanitation and storm water disposal services to the population of Dhaka City as stipulated in the Water Supply and Sewerage Authority Act, 1996.
Dhaka city is the capital of Bangladesh, a country of about 140 million people. Dhaka city is estimated to have a 2005 population of about 11 million people within the Dhaka Metropolitan Area (DMA) and 8.6 million within the DWASA service area. DWASA is responsible for operating and maintaining the: (i) water supply services; (ii) sewerage services and (iii) storm water drainage service of the city of Dhaka. It is estimated that DWASA presently serves total of 7.7 million (people with water supply, nearly 90% of the people living in the Dhaka WASA Service area. The remaining estimated 10% (860,000. people) are mostly served by private wells abstracting water from the same aquifer under the city.

Access to Information through Mobile Phones in Dhaka City: A Study on Users’ Perception and Satisfaction

The introduction of mobile phone has been pretty late in Bangladesh compared to that of the neighboring countries. The mobile telecommunication service has been doubling on an annual basis over the last two or three years. Now information access through mobile phones in Bangladesh is increased. The purpose of this paper is to find out the determinants that are significantly influencing telecom customer’s perception in Bangladesh. The study surveyed 186 telecom customers in Bangladesh from Dhaka city to determine the key influential factors that significantly influence on their perception. The data analyses were conducted by exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling to test the hypothesis. The results of the statistical analysis reflected that most of the telecom customers are highly concerned about service quality followed by corporate image. It is hoped that the findings may assist the mobile phone operators in production of their services and promotion of their information services.

Road vehicular accidents have been so frequent and common to everyday life that people tend to disregard that these “high velocity moving lumps of metal” are very lethal and sometimes pose as “weapons of mass destruction” A traffic accident is defined as any vehicle accident occurring on a public highway (i.e. originating on, terminating on, or involving a vehicle partially on the highway). These accidents therefore include collisions between vehicles and animals, vehicles and pedestrians, or vehicles and fixed obstacles. Single vehicle accidents, in which one vehicle alone (and no other road user) was involved, are included. All fatality and injury totals include pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists unless otherwise note. Time and again, various circles, media included, have pointed out that stringent enforcement of traffic rules and regulations, and routine examination of fitness certificates and other relevant documents of motorised vehicles and driving licences of the drivers could play a major role in bringing down the number of road traffic accidents and fatalities. The problem is acute in Bangladesh, which has one of the highest fatality rates for road accidents in the world.

The main objective of this study is analysis the water pollution at Hazaribagh Tahan in Dhaka city and analysis causes, impact and the effects on human, aquatic animals and the environment. This formative study examined the perceived susceptibility of hepatitis C among the injecting drug users of Dhaka city. A total of 384 currently injecting drug users were interviewed with structured questionnaire in the statistically metropolitan area of Dhaka. The structured questionnaire included their socio-demographic information, knowledge about hepatitis C; hepatitis C related risk practices and health care seeking practices.
